6/69 Outbuilding approx. 50
metres north west of
Apton Hall Farmhouse
GV II
An unusual outbuilding, possibly a former gamelarder or malthouse. C18. Red
brick. Square plan. 2 storeys. Hipped roof, now corrugated iron clad,
surmounted by a square louvre with domed head, ball and pointed finial. There
is a simple doorway to ground floor south face. The first floor of north face
has vertical ventilator slits of uneven pattern and to the west face is a ground
floor opening which could have accommodated a shaft or a pipe. Internally there
is no sign that the building was ever used as a pigeon loft as the outside
suggests. There is a ceiling at first floor level to half of the building, the
western half is open to the roof. The one entrance is scarcely wide enough for
a carthouse and thus could not have been used as a stable. Q.v. 6/68.
