14/06/74 Nos.26, 27 AND 28
GV II
3 houses in row, 2 with shops. Early C19. Flemish bond
brickwork, slate mansard roofs, but modified to Nos 27 & 28.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic, each 1 window; No.26 has a wide
tripartite sash flat-roofed dormer. Nos 26 & 27 have 2-storey
oriels, and No.28 retains the original format of a full-height
bow; all have 6:9:6-pane sashes to the top floor, with dentil
cornices, and 8:12:8-pane sashes remain to Nos 27 & 28, but
No.26 and the ground floor to No.28 have no glazing bars.
No.26 has a splendid late C19 shop front, with contemporary
shutters, and with decorative cast-iron cresting above
panelled pilasters and double consoles. No.27 has a
plate-glass front between pilasters and very deep consoles and
shallow fascia with remains of a dentil cornice. No.28 has, to
the right, in an arched opening and on 3 steps, an original
6-panel door under a reversed fan transom light, in deep
reveals. A plain band above first floor, moulded cornice,
blocking-course and coped parapet. Each has a brick stack to
the left.
INTERIOR: the plan in RCHME (p.348) show a transverse
staircase dividing the 2 rooms, and service additions to the
rear.
This remains one of the best examples of the former domestic
architecture of the Melcombe Regis streets.
(RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 348, 352).
