Pair of houses, one time rectory. Late C18. Flemish bond brickwork, slate double roof with transverse central valley. 3 storeys and attics, 3+3 windows, all sashes in plaster-lined and painted reveals and with fine rubbed brick voussoirs. 4 hipped dormers with 6-pane in wide surrounds, above 6-pane to stone sills at second floor and deep 12-pane to a moulded Portland stone sill band at first floor; the first 3 of these, in No.81, have been cut back from the sill, with smaller bottom panes. Ground floor has a wide opening with steel lintel, and a blocked wide arched doorway with elliptical head to each house. A stone moulded cornice, blocking-course. Double gable stacks to coped verges. The rear has two 6-pane sash hipped dormers and 2 roof-lights above 2+2 windows, but all temporarily blocked, and the blocking-course is rendered. A deep but narrow later wing projects between bays 1 and 2. INTERIOR not inspected. This was an unusually grand pair of houses, in the best Georgian tradition. They are set back considerably, and until c1990 had shops projecting forward to the street line. The removal of these shops, and eventual reinstatement of the original ground-floor detail, represent a considerable enhancement for the building and the street.
