Dairy range, now stores. Probably late C18 for Sir John Tngilby. Coursed
squared gritstone and limestone, graduated stone slate roof. Single storey,
15 bays, the central wide gabled bay projecting. Central bay: C20 sliding
door; blocked flanking windows have plain lintels undercut to form a
segmental arch. Projecting band at eaves level, gable coping forming simple
pediment. Range to left: board doors with plain lintels to bays 1 and 2;
bays 3, 4 and 5 have segmental-arched openings blocked or reduced with two
16-pane sashes and a board door inserted; bay 6 has a segmental-arched
window with a frame of 2 shallow pointed-arched lights, possibly original
and reset; bay 7 has a part-glazed board door in rendered surround. Range
to right: bay 1, board door with plain lintel; bays 2 and 3, windows with
cambered arched heads and 2-light frames, the central bars removed, the bay
3 window in an arched recess; bays 4 to 7 all have segmental arches: bay 4
has a shuttered window, bays 5 to 7 have board doors. Hipped roofs; remains
of a wooden louvre to ridge, bay 12. Rear, centre - 3 steps up to a
cambered archway flanked by narrower round arches with large voussoirs, and
incised blocks. The roof is segmental arched. This structure forms an open
loggia projecting from the rear wall of the dairy block which has a central
6-panel door. Rear of left range: a lean-to meat larder has 3 segmental-
arched windows with remains of original pegged wooden frames and iron bars;
a row of 3 similar openings in the rear wall of the right range. Interior.
The central bay and range to right derelict at time of resurvey. The
central dairy has remains of a vaulted plastered ceiling with central
ventilator and shelving around the walls. The former meat and game larders
(bays 4, 5, 6, 12 and 13) have cross beams with hooks. This range also
contained the slaughter house.
