6/175 Wall with gateway and attached
- cottage attached to south west of
Walreddon Manor

GV II*

Wall with gateway and attached cottage (formerly outbuilding of uncertain function).
Wall and gateway of mid C17, cottage possibly of C17 origin, remodelled early C18,
particularly on north west side facing Walreddon Manor, and altered C20 to provide
living accommodation. Granite rubble with granite dressings, slate roof with raised
coped verges.
Wall attaches the former outbuilding to Walreddon Manor (qv), forming a screen wall
between the front of the house and the stable yard to the side. The outbuilding is
of rectangular plan, completely remodelled internally as living accommodation.
Rubble wall about 10 metres long and about 5 metres high, with cornice, has tall 4-
centred arched gateway with double doors. Attached to end the 2-storey cottage has
gable end with pedimental gable with granite acorns to sides on plinths. The wall is
built in 2 sections, with straight joint to right of the gateway, and there is a
blocked segmental-headed opening with key block in second section at lower level.
The right side of the cottage has an attached wall ramped down to right with a
pointed arched chamfered doorway leading to the side of the cottage; this has 2
windows, all C20 2-light casements, with central half-glazed door and early dripstone
or remains of string course to right. Roof hipped behind C18 gable. The rear gable
end of the cottage has C20 glazed doors and blocked single granite light to right,
C20 2-light casement at first floor right. Left side has chamfered ventilation
slits, 2 at ground and first floor. Gable end to rear has rubble stack.
Interior not inspected.
