Description

WASHPOND LANE
1.
5190
Dairy Cottage and barns
SZ 08 SW 1/147 at Godlingston Manor
II GV

2.
Built 1875, following a fire in 1871, which destroyed the earlier farm buildings and
damaged the Manor House qv. Built on an E-plan - the southern (front) sections of the
arms of the E having stone walls, and the rear sections of brick. Steeply pitched
slate roofs with half-hips. The front part of the western arm of the E comprises a
cottage, the rest of the structures being barns, stables, etc. Mainly of 2-storeys,
some sections also have attics. The cottage is of one-storey and attics. It has a
central doorway with a gabled porch on timber brackets, and casement windows. Central
dormer with pitched roof. The barns have ledged doors, and some stone mullioned
windows. In spite of some later alterations and additions this is an interesting
example of a late Victorian "model" farm layout in a simple Gothic style.
