Description

NU 22 SW NEWTON-BY-THE-SEA LOW NEWTON-BY-THE-SEA

3/187 Watch House:
Enclosure wall with
attached outbuildings
GV II

Wall and outbuildings, second quarter of C19. Rubble; outbuildings have Welsh
slate roofs. Whinstone rubble with cut dressings; outbuilding roofs Welsh
slate. Semi-octagonal plan. Enclosure wall with gabled coping over 2 metres
high externally but 1.2 metres internally. Pent outbuilding with boarded
doors in western (landward) angles; narrow gateway in centre of west side.

The height of the wall and artificially-raised ground level within, together
with the narrow single entrance, suggests that the enclosure was constructed
with an eye to defence.
