Pair of houses, now Masonic Hall and house. Early C18, with
alterations late C18 and early C19. Irregularly coursed ashlar
with steep pitched slate roof. Ashlar and stucco dressings,
plinth, rusticated quoins, first floor and eaves bands, deep
moulded stone eaves; sill bands and dentillated eaves at rear.
Single ridge and single gable stacks, single coped gable with
kneeler. 2 storeys plus attics, 7 bays. Central pedimented
Doric portico contains recessed panel with 2 plain sashes,
flanked by single pilastered doorcases with cornices and hoods
and 2 leaf doors. Beyond, to left, 2 leaded sashes; to right, 2
C20 casements, all with projecting architraves. Above, 7
glazing bar sashes with projecting architraves; above again,
central segmental pedimented dormer, flanked by single pedimented
dormers, with 2 glazing bar sashes and single C20 louvre. To
right, single storey, single bay C19 addition with central ashlar
doorcase. To left, C20 2 storey extension is of no interest.
Rear elevation has off-centre paired doors, flanked by single
canted 2 storey bay windows with 3 glazing bar sashes on each
floor. To left, bow corridor forming link to 35a, with doorway
and, to left, blocked opening; to right, single glazing bar
casement. Above, balustrade, and above again, single plain sash
and single glazing bar sash. To left again, pedimented rear wing
has central French window and above, glazing bar Diocletian
window with hood mould. Interior has, to right, large ashlar
fireplace with projecting square bases and imposts and rusticated
lintel, flanked by single smaller openings with plain lintels. 2
storey open well cantilevered stone stairs with iron balusters
and mahogany handrail. Single late C18 carved timber fireplace
and mantelshelf; several 4 and 6 panel C18 doors.
