3 pairs of piers, the first in front of the garden door of the house, the
second at the outer ends of the first terrace; the third at the centre of a
second terrace c.23 metres from the house. Late C17/early C18. First pair
sandstone rubble with ashlar finials; second pair brick, mostly rendered,
with ashlar dressings and finials; third pair painted render with ashlar
dressings and painted statues. All piers square. First pair: truncated piers
have moulded plinths; urn finials on swept coping have high, spiral-knobbed
tops. Second pair c.1.5 metres high, with prominent cornices; ball finials on
stepped coping and moulded bases. Third pair probably slightly shortened, now
c.one metre high, with prominent cornices and statues on square coping. Each
figure c.0.7 metre high; probably mythical; the left a Cupid, the right a boy
carrying a gourd - possibly damaged lute - and leaning on vine; both damaged.
Included for group value.
