4/409 Barns of Houghall Farm

GV II

Barns. Probably medieval: part of the lands of Durham Priory. Sandstone
rubble with ashlar dressings and some quoins; roof of asbestos tiles. L-plan.
One storey; 4-bay building at left with slightly lower L-shaped extension of
2 bays by 6 in right return.

First building has high opposed doors under stone lintels, flanked by buttresses
on rear wall and with buttress at left on front wall. Stone sill and wood
lintel to boarded door at left, with block jambs. Massive stone sill to blocked
opening at left end. Right building has wood lintels to boarded door and empty
opening; quoins at left. Right return has wood lintels to varied openings and
opposite doors, that on rear replaced with sliding door. Last bay contains 2
small triangular ventilation holes, one blocked. Blocked 3-light stone-mullioned
window to left of door, and on rear to left of door.
