5/17 Barn and adjoining horse mill approximately 45 16.9.87 metres west of Waterton Hall Farmhouse

Threshing barn and adjoining horse mill. Mid-late C18 barn with later alterations, early C19 horse mill. Red-brown brick. Pantile roofs. Barn rectangular on plan with central through waggon entrance and horse mill adjoining east side. 2-storey height with 3 tiers of openings, 5 internal bays. West side: waggon entrance (doors missing) beneath timber lintel (a reused section of timber framing) and recessed basket-arched panel. Bottom tier of openings: to left, 3 blocked breather slits; to right, a pair of blocked slits, a rectangular hatch and an inserted segmental-headed window with glazing bars. Middle tier: to left, a single slit, and an inserted board door beneath a cambered brick arch and blocked opening, flanked by single casements with glazing bars and brick sills beneath similar arches; to right, a partly-blocked opening with a board hatch door to lower half, flanked by single slits. 5 slits to upper tier, flanking the blocked openings. Stepped eaves. Shaped stone kneeler to left gable; C20 rebuilt right gable. East side: waggon entrance similar to west side with later brick blocking containing segmental-headed door. Bottom tier: to left, 3 slits and hatch; to right, 2 slits and door. Middle tier: to left, 2 slit and hatch; to right, 3 slits flanking 2 hatches. Top tier: 6 slits. Dentilled brick eaves cornice. Horse mill adjoining to left: single storey, with canted east end and south side incorporated in foldyard wall which is not of special interest. Brick piers carring hipped roof. Open sides to north and east, inserted dwarf wall to north-east side. Interior. Barn contains flagstone threshing floor and 5-bay roof with tie beams to main trusses, intermediate collared principal rafters and 2 tiers of staggered butt purlins. Horse mill contains original machinery, comprising a chamfered central spindle shaft with tongue stops and raking struts to cross beams with harness attachment arms, and an upper drive wheel with iron teeth. The spindle is pivoted on an iron pin resting in a socket stone. Probably the most complete set of horse mill machinery surviving in South Humberside. The barn may be contemporary with the nearby stable/dovecote (qv) dated 1767. The ranges adjoining the barn and horse mill are not of special interest.
