Description

ST TUDY ST TUDY
SX 0676-0776
8/209 Butts Park and slate garden wall
and gate piers to west

II

House and garden wall. Circa late C18 with circa early, mid and late C19 extensions.
Rendered and painted local stone rubble and cob. Rag slate roofs with gabled and
hipped ends. Rendered brick axial and end stacks.
Plan: Complicated arrangement with early, mid and late C19 extensions and as
interior was not accessible, the original internal arrangement is uncertain. The
central southern range possibly comprises the earlier circa late C18 house with a 2-
room and through passage plan, heated by end stacks. In circa early C19, the house
was extended with a cross wing to left (west) with a range of 2-room plan, continuing
to rear to form an overall 'L' shaped plan; the south western room, sharing the
earlier end stack on the left hand gable end of the earlier range and the north room
heated by an end stack. Possibly also in early C19 a wing was added to the rear of
the right hand (east) room of the earlier range to form an overall 'U' shaped plan.
In circa mid C19 an outshot was added across the rear, between the 2 later wings. In
circa late C19 an extension of 1-room plan was added on the right hand (east) gable
end of the earlier range, heated by an end stack.
Exterior: 2-storeys. Regular 1:3:1 window south front. Central glazed C19 porch
with sash to left and 4 pane sash to right. To far right late C19 canted bay window.
First floor with late C19 4-pane sash, 3 C19 2-light casements and late C19 4-pane
sash to right. West front has a regular 3 window front with C19 2-light casements.
Interior: Not accessible.
Garden wall to west of house constructed of large vertical slate slabs with granite
corner posts and granite square-on-plan gate piers.
