Description

SNAITH AND COWICK SPA WELL LANE SE 62 SW (west side) 2/95 Brewery, malt-kiln and adjoining ranges approximately 10 metres south of No 2 (Wells House) GV II Brewery, now grain store; malt-kiln, maltings, stable/cart-shed/ granary and associated outbuildings. Late C18 - early C19 brewery, incorporated in ranges of c1888 for Hartley's Brewery Company Ltd. Late C18 - early c19 brewery range in yellow brick with Welsh slate roof; later C19 ranges in red brick, rendered to east side, with Welsh slate roofs to malt-kiln and adjoining range to south, pantile roofs to remainder. L-shaped on plan; forms south and east sides of courtyard, with main C19 Crown Brewery range to west (qv), and brewery-master's house and inn, No 2 (Wells House), to north (qv). South range comprises late C19 stable/cart-shed/granary, malt- kiln and store-rooms; east range comprises store-rooms or maltings; late C18 - early C19 brewery building adjoins in angle. South range: 2-storey stable/cart-shed/granary with 3 first-floor openings. Cart-shed section to right has 3 openings with pair of cast-iron columns supportng timber lintel; boarded front with door to right opening. To left, pair of stable doors and part-glazed wooden slatted ventilator grilles beneath segmental arches. First floor: board door and pair of hatches with sandstone sills. Dentilled brick eaves cornice. Low 2-storey malt-kiln set back to left has single first-floor part-glazed hatch and hipped roof with central cowl. Single- storey range to left has blocked opening, outshut projecting forward to left, and hipped roof. Late C18 - early C19 brewery range, west side, facing courtyard: low 2-storey single-bay section to left, with tall 2- storey single-bay section to right. Ground floor, partly-obscured by adjoining ranges, has tall blocked segmental-arched opening to right, lower segmental-arched entrance to left and rebuilt section to left end; 4-pane first-floor sash window to left, large lateral stack to right. Gabled ventilator to roof of higher section. Single-storey east range has corbelled eaves, roof hipped to left. C20 additions to inner angle of courtyard are of no special interest. In 1838 James Latham, brewer and maltster, was operating at West Cowick. Not fully investigated. Some sections disused and in decay at tide of resurvey.
