SD 53 SE BROUGHTON FERNYHALGH LANE

8/22 Roman Catholic School

GV II

School, now parish centre and nursery school. Dated 1836 on parapet. Dressed
sandstone in watershot coursing, slate roofs. H-plan. Symmetrical: a 3-bay
2-storey house with single-storey crosswings (the original schoolrooms). In
simple classical style, with plinth, bands, moulded cornice, low parapet, and
gable end stacks, the wings with corner pilaster strips and pedimented gables;
central doorway to house (now mostly blocked) has a moulded architrave and
cornice; the 2 windows at ground floor and the single window in each wing are
set in recesses rising from the plinth, and all windows are vertical
rectangular with altered glazing. The centre of the pediment to the house is
lettered MDCCCXXXVI, and the pediments of the wings contain stone tablets
lettered respectively GIRLS and BOYS. Both wings are 3 bays in length, and
the left wing has a short flat-roofed extension to the full length of the
return wall.
