G.V. II
House. Early C18, possibly remodelling of early building, C19 extension. Limestone
rubble walls. Steeply pitched hipped slate roof with coved cornice at sprocketted
eaves. 1 rendered rubble axial stack, 2 gable end brick stacks, the right-hand one
is rendered.
Double depth plan with central entrance hall and 2 principal front rooms, with
probably smaller service rooms behind. Principal rooms heated by gable end stacks.1
room extension added in C19 to right end in similar style also heated by gable end
stack. Probably C19 rear additions.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front comprising symmetrical 3-window part with
central door to original house to left and 2-window extension at right with straight
joint between. All windows are circa mid C19 sashes in original openings with flat
brick arches with narrow projecting keystones. These are reproduced in C19
extension. C20 gabled conservatory/porch with part glazed door. Fire insurance
mark above window over door. Low stone wall almost immediately in front of house
has iron railings on top which have patterned wrought iron panels.
Interior inaccessible at time of survey but may contain good C18 features.
This house occupies a prominent position in the centre of Ipplepen and its
relatively unspoilt C18 facade forms an important feature of the street.
