SU 30 SW BROCKENHURST SOUTHAMPTON ROAD

10/5 Rose & Crown Hotel

GV II

Hotel. C18 extended C19 and C20. Brick, old plain tile roof. 2 storey and attic,
originally 4 bay, crosswings added each end C19 and second pile, further extensions
C20 incorporating earlier service buildings. Front has central C20 door under
heavy C19 gabled hood on brackets. 2 bay each side have 9-pane sashes under rubbed
arches. On 1st floor 9-pane sashes and dentilled eaves. Above end bays gabled
2-light dormers. RH crosswing has wider 12-pane sash and over 12-pane, both under
rubbed arches. LH wing has C20 door under rectangular fanlight and wide 12-pane
sash, over 12-pane sash, both under rubbed arches. Ridge stacks each end of
centre part and on outside walls of crosswing with small gabled roof running to
main roof. The Rose & Crown Inn is marked on William Driver's 1789 'Map of the
New Forest'.
