Small country house now school. 1898 by W R Lethaby for Thomas Eustace Smith.
Brick colourwashed on entrance front, old plain tile roof. Main part of 2 storey
3 bay centre range with 2 bay wide crosswings that project on each side and at one
end service wing of 3 bays and projecting gable on entrance front, and 2 bays, the
end one gabled, on garden side. Front has,to centre of main part,porch of open
front with walls each side topped by wide cornice,that raised over front as arch.
Above and overhanging all round low-pitched hipped lead hood. Each side cross-
window. On 1st floor 2-light casements. Crosswing to RH has between floors to
LH large cross-window to staircase. Over, at eaves level of central part, but below
kneelered gable wall, is heavy moulded cornice. From this level part of cruciform
section gable stack projects. LH crosswing has offset plinth, and on ground floor
3-light segmental head casement and 2-light casement beside with 2 more on 1st floor.
Rest of gable similar to other. Service wing to LH has 3-light segmental head
casements either side of centre. Single casement and door at each end. On 1st
floor 3-light casements. At end projecting which has four 12-pane segmental head
sashes. Garden front has 24-pane sashes with louvred shutters to crosswings. Over,
irregular crenellated 1st floor band. On 1st floor 12-pane segmental head sashes
with shutters. Kneelered gable wall with 2-light window at top. On RH side of
each crosswing tall side stack. Centre part gabled. 3 tall arched openings, with
arched part divided from rest. In centre french doors, each side 18-pane sash.
Fanlights over. On 1st floor, Palladian window. In gable 3-light casement. To
RH 3-light casements in service range 1st bay, and 3-light segmental head casement
and oriel with lead panel below, in end bay. Over it, tilehung gable with 3-light
casement and large ridge stack. Inside most features survive. Behind entrance
run corridors on both floors. In centre is library in what was drawing room with
2 levels of windows and large fireplace.
