Farmhouse. C16 and C17, modernised in the late C19. Local stone and flint rubble,
the main block has limestone ashlar quoins and although the front is plastered a
section of coursed blocks of limestone ashlar shows at the west end; stone rubble
stacks topped with C19 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: F-plan house. The main block has a 3-room-and-cross-passage plan facing
south-south-west, say south. The centre room is heated by an axial stack backing
onto the left (western) room. The passage is between the centre and right rooms and
the right room has a gable-end stack. Single storey service blocks, both 1-room
plan project to rear of the right room and behind left of centre.
Since no internal inspection was available to determine the historic development of
the house. Nevertheless this is believed to be a C16 open hall house, possibly
heated by an open hearth fire.
House is now 2 storeys with single storey service rear blocks.
Exterior: irregular 4-window front. The ground floor right window is a C19 20-pane
sash. The rest are a variety of C19 casements with glazing bars. The passage front
doorway is right of centre and it contains a C19 part-glazed door behind a wrought
iron trellis porch which incorporates the date 1924. The ground floor left window
is in the blocking of a C16 or C17 triangular-headed limestone ashlar doorway. The
main roof is half-hipped to left and gable-ended to right.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but the owner
claims that it contains a great deal of carpentry and other detail.
Old Chapel forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings which make up the
scattered hamlet of Rawridge.
