SX 79 SE CHERITON BISHOP CHERITON BISHOP

10/37 Underhill

GV II

Farmhouse, later 2 cottages, now house. C16 core, C17 improvements, divided in
late C18-early C19, united and modernised in 1970s. Plastered cob on rubble
footings; rubble and cob stacks topped with C19 brick; gable-ended pantile roof
(formerly thatch). Much altered 3-room-and-through-passage plan. Now 2 storeys
throughout, faces east. Cob stack in north gable; stone axial stack serving both
central and southern rooms blocks former passage and creates present lobby entrance
arrangement. Secondary front door to northern room. 5-window front of mainly
C19/20 wooden casements of various size and irregular disposition (most with
glazing bars). Left-end first floor window is C17 4-light oak frame with chamfered
mullions. Large lobby door under C20 hood. Inside C17 oak doorframes (chamfered
surrounds with scroll stops) lead from lobby to southern and central rooms. Former
has stone fireplace with oak lintel also chamfered with scroll stops and C16 cross
beam (chamfered with step stops). Stone fireplace to central room is partly
rebuilt and includes large late C18 early C19 brick bread oven. Northern gable-end
fireplace a C20 rebuild. Roof is mainly C18 but incorporates remains of one C16
smoke-blackened, side-pegged jointed cruck truss over hall. C17 lobby-entrance
plan is unusual in Devon.
