Description

BRADFORD STREET 1. 885 (West Side) BOCKING No 11 TL 7523 2/48 25.10.51. II* GV

2. A timber-framed and plastered house built in the second half of the C16, originally on a T shaped plan with a cross wing at the south end, but C18 alterations and additions made the plan irregular. 2 storeys, attics and cellars. The crosswing, partly jettied on the 1st storey projects at the south end with 3 window range and the main block extends to the north with 2 window range, double-hung sashes with glazing bars, in flush cased frames. Two of the windows on the 1st storey are 3-light and the ground storey has 2 3-light bays. The north end of the main block is also partly jettied on the 1st storey and is partly underbuilt in brick, (painted). The east front has 2 large C18 rain water heads under the jetty. A number of gabled wings extend to the west at the rear making a picturesque group of gabled roofs. The south side of the rear wing is jettied with a long range of casements under the jetty. Roofs tiled, with an original chimney stack with 3 octagonal shafts on a rectangular base. The interior has a number of original features including 2 open fireplaces with carved wood fire surrounds, panelling, doors and a fresco painting on the ground storey. RCHM (36).

Nos 3 to 13 (odd) form a group with Little Bradfords and barn to the south east of Little Bradfords on the east side.
