Briningham House

House. 1838. Greek Revival. Gault brick, slated roof. A four-square cube of
2 storeys with a 3 bay front and 5 bay return. Entrance front with doubled end
pilasters and single pilasters to central bay. Two ground floor and 3 first floor
sashes with glazing bars. Stone porch with unfluted Greek Doric Columns antae and
entablature. Part glazed door with margin lights. To garden : 5 sashes with glazing
bars, double end pilasters, single pilasters to central bay. Prominent eaves with
cornice missing above pilaster capitals. Shallow hipped roof with two stacks on
ridges. Two bay 2 storey service to west, sashes with glazing bars. Large mid C18
oak staircase round three sides of a well with a landing. Three twisted balusters per
thread with carved strings; panelled risers and panelling against wall, frieze of egg
and dart and modillions to the landing. Rail with swan's neck sweeps at each
junction.
