House. 1937. By Connell, Ward and Lucas for H. Tanburn. Reinforced
concrete post and panel construction. Rendered. Flat roof. International
Modern Style. 2 storeys with roof deck and basement. Projecting entrance
bay just off centre. Curved outer staircase with hood. Glazed panels
flank door. Completely glazed 3 x 7 vertical upper stage to entrance bay
for stairs. Set back slightly to left is service end of house. Ground
floor on pilotis with part basement. Long horizontal ranges of windows
in steel frames with hoods or 'eyebrows'. Parapet. Curved stairs from
front at left return angle. A round light immediately to left of
entrance. To right and set well back is living room range with garage
below ground floor on pilotis. 3 square ground floor windows. Continuous
horizontal glazing on first floor. Eaves project slightly. Iron balcony
to roof which has a curved shaped canopy, originally open, closed with
glass and aluminium panelling. Right return has open ground floor
balcony with cantilevered first floor. Garden front: curved outer
staircase to right to recess on ground floor which is entirely glazed.
Semi-circular cantilevered dining room projection to right. Railings to
balcony to left. First floor continuous horizontal glazing and hood.
Curved canopy on roof swept round to follow plane of garden front. To
far right a short block projects with 2 windows. Interior: retains
original arrangement with structural posts as features, one
incorporating flue from fireplace. (Journal of the RIBA, 17/7/37, p.901:
