Description

TL 11 SW ST MICHAEL HARPENDEN ROAD (west side) CHILDWICK BURY

5/281 Garden wall to SE of Childwick Bury Manor 19.9.78

GV II

Garden wall. Late C18, altered late C19. Red brick with vitrified brick buttresses and piers. Square plan, the walls about 4 metres high. Wide openings on NW and SE sides, formerly giving uninterrupted prospect from house, but NW side blocked by late C19 greenhouses. Flanking walls on this side have square pavilions. The outer sides of the pavilions have pedimented doorways, the inner sides roundels. SE opening has late C19 terracotta garden wall, beyond which is a C18 'ha-ha'. A good example of a walled garden that has been integrated with the SE axis of the house.
