House. Late medieval open hall house. Early C17 N crosswing and early C17 floor and chimney inserted in hall and extension to S, later extension to rear of crosswing. Timber frame on red brick sill. Exposed framing with plastered panels, red brick casing to ground floor of N wing and S bay of front. Steep old red tile roofs. A long 2-storeys building set back from road facing E with a 2-storeys and attic crosswing at N not projecting but with a gabled rear extension. Entrance into hall range at N end beside crosswing and passing behind inserted chimney to hall fireplace. Separate entrance to S, 2-bays extension. Large external N-side chimney to crosswing with 2 diagonally set square shafts. External rear gable chimney to NW extension, and internal gable chimney to S end. E front has 4 3-lights casement windows on each floor, shallow on 1st floor and deep on the ground floor. The 1st floor window in the gable N of-the wing has small 2-lights windows on each side at the head. Small ovolo moulded window over entrance door. Interior has exposed frame of the 2-bays open hall with curved braces to the tie-beam of the open truss, hollow chamfered. Remains of wall painting of 1600-25 period on N wall of hall of painted panelling with central flower device, freehand in deep red on yellow/brown ground. Also 4-centred plastered brick fireplace on 1st floor has signs of painted decoration in painted panels and 2 fragmentary figures. Chamfered and bar stopped joists and beam of inserted floor in hall. Ground floor of wing has squared joists but chamfered beam with 2-bars stop. External framing of hall bays distinguished from square framing of S extension. (RCHM Typescript).
