14/28 Chest tomb to Phillips family
and railings approx. 10m. N of

Chest tomb. c.1736. White marble and stone stepped base; white marble chest with
grey marble top. Rectangular. Moulded base. Central oval panels to sides with
ornate deeply carved shell surrounds. Recessed moulded corners with palm leaf
carving to base. Grey marble top with cyma reversa and cyma recta moulded edge.
Railings with decorative shaped tops, and vase-top finials to corners.
Inscription on oval panel to churchwards side reads in "Here lyeth the body of
Thomas Phillips, sone of Matthew Phillips, of this parish. Whose known skill and
diligence in his profession, joined with great probity in his dealings gave him
that reputation in business which recommended him to be Carpenter to their
Majesties, King George the First and King George the Second. He died the 14th
day of August 36, aged 47 years....".
