GV II
Originally one house, later converted into 4 dwellings, now 3. C15 core with
C16 alterations and major rebuilding of mid C17. A 3-cell main range with
slightly lower in-line addition to right. Timber framed and rendered, the
ground floor of the facade faced in red brick. Roof of main range has
concrete pantiles to front, the rear slope and the right hand addition roofed
with C20 patent clay tiles. 2 storeys and attic. Mid C20 small-paned
casement windows. 4 doors, No.36 retaining an old plank door, the rest C20.
One gabled dormer. Internal stack with axial shaft of narrow brick. Gable
stacks with rendered external shafts. Interior. No.36 comprises hall and
service cells of original house. C15 work includes 2 rear wallposts with C17
upper sections scarfed on; one rear wallpost is buttress-shafted and carried
the open truss. Service partition, perhaps C15, has evidence for central
arched doorways. Hall has fine C16 inserted ceiling with ogee-moulded cross-
beams and hollow-chamfered joists with run-out stops. Remains of one C16
moulded wallpost. Fireplace rebuilt, retaining good C16 lintol. C17 ceiling
in service end re-uses some heavy C15 joists. Much of studding is mid C17,
together with upper ceilings and roof. Most of timbers in No.34 said to be
concealed; there is a mid C17 ground floor ceiling with small square joists.
Interior of No.32 not examined.
