5/47 Hawkswell House
II
Large house, now flats, 1914-20 by Arthur Campbell Martin of Egham
for Col C. Audry. Hand made brickwork of excellent quality, and
tiled roofs. 'E'-plan with entrance in central projecting 2-storey
block. Doorway recessed, with three orders of brick arches and
composite tile keystone. Moulded brick springings. Cross braced
oak door with leaded fanlight. Windows to ground floor 12-pane
sashes to 3 bays to right of porch, 8-pane sashes the three bays to
left. First floor has leaded casement windows. Wide boxed eaves.
Wings project by 2 bays with part-external stacks to gable ends
carrying diamond set flues. Hipped dormers to attic floor. Tall
brick stacks with moulded brick cornices. On left two parallel
ranges gabled to east. Roofs hipped, with valleys laced. Gables
raised as parapets. Service yard to right has tall water tower
with pyramidal roof.
Interior: Short hall and stair with barley-sugar oak balusters and
heavy handrail. Drawing room to left, and music room to rear with
shallow bow window. Cornices. Bolection moulded wood fire
surrounds with black and white marble slips. Three panelled doors.
Converted to four flats by MoD before second world war. Martin
worked in the manner of Lutyens at Dauntsey's School, West
Lavington, and Sandhurst, also worked on restoration projects at
North Wraxall and Guisborough Hall.
