Description

EARL STONHAM BLACKSMITH'S LANE
TM 06 SE
1/85 Jockeys Farmhouse
-
GV II

Former farmhouse. Probably c.1576 (see below). 2 storeys. 3-cell cross-
passage entrance plan. Timber framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof with
axial chimney of red brick; a dentilled wooden early C19 eaves cornice.
Mainly mid C20 casements. C19 6-panelled entrance door. Complete unmoulded
framing exposed internally: floor joists with narrow chamfers and run-out
stops. Studwork with arch stud-bracing and diamond-mullioned windows, some of
which are restored and glazed. 3 open fireplaces, each with a plain oak
lintel; around the stack is an original newel stair. Clasped-purlin roof with
cranked wind-braces. A clap-boarded 1st storey partition may be a part of the
repositioned cross-passage screen. A 2-storey rear extension of red brick
with hipped plaintiled roof is scratch-dated 1821. A document dated 1643
refers to a building lease for this site dated 1576, and may therefore give
the construction date for the house. c.p. Hines Farmhouse, Earl Stonham (Item
2/111)
