Description

HEWELSFIELD GENERAL
SO 50 SE
6/35 Monument to WIFE
OF GEORGE GEO ...
in the churchyard
c7m south of the
tower to the church
of St Mary Magdalen
GV II*
Chest tomb. Late C17 or early C18. Sandstone. Flat top to moulded edge,
heavy gadrooned quarter balusters, cartouches to all faces, moulding of sunk
base just visible at time of survey, November, 1982. Part inscription reads
'wife of George Geo ... ...76' which might be 1676; and on the south side
'wife of William Lewis, 1745'. The overall design postulates a design of the
early C18, but it is just possibly late C17.
