Church. C13 - C15, restored 1878 and S porch dated 1635. Coursed rubble
stone with ashlar buttresses and battlements and parapetted roof. W tower
with spire, nave, transepts, chancel and S porch. Adjoins Nevill Holt Hall
(q.v.) on W. C14 tower of 3 stages : 4 2-light bell openings, gargoyles,
battlements, recessed spire with tiers of lucarnes, foliage finial and weathervane.
Double chamfered nave arch, the inner on polygonal responds. 2 3-light Perp
windows either side of nave. Blocked N door. S doorway with moulded arch.
Restored 3 bay low-pitch moulded tie-beam roof with head stops. Late C13
N transept double chamfered arch the inner on polygonal responds with foliage
capitals.Perp N window. Double chamfered chancel arch, the inner on polygonal
responds. Chancel has N, S and E Perp windows the latter with stained glass
of 1878. Piscina and double sedilia with shafts, many-moulded arches and head
stop. Low-pitch tie-beam roof. S transept has Perp S window with fragments
of C16 stained glass and blocked E and W windows. S porch has rounded arch
and battlements. Fine series of monuments.Sir Thomas Nevill, died 1636,
in carved and painted alabaster and marble. An aedicule over a table tomb
with 3 columns on front and a recumbent effigy in armour. Carved stone and
marble table tomb erected by Sir Thomas Nevill, 1633, to Sir Thomas Nevill,
died 1569. Carved alabaster and marble wall monument to Jane Thursby, died
1631 : a kneeling figure and desk under a canopy with curtains held by 2 angels.
Carved white marble and slate wall monument to Anne Neville, died 1644. Further
C18 and mid C19 Nevill wall monuments. Norman font, round, with feet at angles,
on square base. C16 wrought iron railings to S transept and 5 hatchments
in it. Elaborately carved oak earlier C17 octagonal pulpit with back-panelling
and tester. Tablet over S porch arch is inscribed 'Thomas Nevill of Holt
Knight built this porch at his coste Anno Domini 1635'. Pevsner and V.C.H.,
Vol.V.
