Whiteley Village

10/299 Nos 86 and 86a

GV II

Almshouse pair. Circa 1912 by Sir Aston Webb. Red brick with parapets and eaves to
centre of truncated pyramidal plain tiled roof. 4 small square stacks to corners
of roof summit. Single storey . Large tripartite glazing bar sashes in outer bays
flanked by moulded brick quasi-pilasters. Central recess with half glazed door to
centre flanked by 2 small casements.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk, and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
