Foundations of shrine chapel. C11 with much later Medieval
rebuilding; demolished 1801; excavated 1954. Ground plan laid
out in dressed stone indicating small nave and narrower
chancel; former entrance to church of St Mary blocked To the
centre a replica of a ?cross found during excavation of an
earlier wooden structure on the site. St Bertelin was an C8
hermit, claimed as the founder of Stafford, whose shrine was a
place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages.
