Pair of buildings flanking entry, formerly gas works, now
store to left, offices to right. 1836, dated on front gables.
Red brick, stuccoed fronts. Slate roof to left, concrete tile
roof to right. Building to left: originally 3x3 bays, now with
additional bay to rear, later range to left side not of
special interest. Truncated front gable stack. Front has 3
blind bays defined by pilasters, with recessed panels.
Pediment above. Inscribed `Gas Works' on frieze. Rendered
plinth. Right side has 3 blind panels under segmental arches.
Blocked opening with flat gauged brick arch to central bay.
C20 window to rear (later) bay. Building to right: 3x2 bays,
later lean-to extensions to sides and rear. Front and rear
gable stacks. Front similar to above with 2 inserted ground
floor oriel windows to outer bays, pediment coping missing.
Left side has 4-pane sashes to first floor in recessed panels,
with small recessed central panel. These are the earliest Gas
Works buildings in East Anglia. The Saffron Walden Gas Company
was established as a private company in 1836. c.f.Great
Bardfield.
