Description

TM 36 SW PARHAM SILVERLACE
GREEN

4/161 Serpentine
- walls at
Parham Hall

- II

A rectangle of serpentine or 'crinkle-crankle' walls, surrounding a
vegetable garden and orchard to the east of the house. C18, with
early C19 repairs and alterations. Red brick, laid in an irregular
bond; about 3m high. Some sections of the walls are more shallowly
curved than others; most parts are 2 bricks thick, some are
buttressed. There is an unbroken stretch along the east side.
Along the west the central section has been rebuilt straight. On
the south, a wide original opening gives access to a pond which
provided the water supply for the garden.
