Description

SP42NE NORTH ASTON A423
(East side)
5/277 Fox House

II
Inn, now house. Probably late Cl7/early C18, altered and extended late C18.
Coursed limestone rubble with wooden lintels; Stonesfield-slate roofs with brick
stacks. 3-unit plan with added rear wing and extension of main range. 2 storeys
plus attic. 3 bays to left of regular 5-window front are earlier but have
late-C18 windows matching those of the added bays: 12-pane sashes at first floor
and 16-pane sashes at ground floor. Bay 3 has a wide opening containing a C20
entrance. Steep-pitched roof has gabled roof dormer over the earlier bays, and
has 3 stacks. Masonry shows many signs of early alterations. Rear wing,
returning from left end, is taller and may be early C18; it has a later canted
bay window but retains segmental-arched first-floor windows. Interior not
inspected. Recorded from 1682; The Fox Inn from 1701 to c.1914.
