GV II*

Terrace of 16 houses. Begun 1787, completed c1800. By William
Paty. Limestone ashlar, brick party wall stacks and a pantile
mansard roof. Double-depth plan. Mid Georgian style.
Each of 3 storeys, attic and basment; 3-window range. A
stepped terrace articulated by giant pilasters to a cornice
and parapet; Nos 3-5 have later attic storeys with moulded
copings. Left-hand semicircular-arched doorways with pilasters
to a pediment, good fanlights, No.2 with a lantern, and
6-panel doors. Entrance to No.1 in the left return has a
moulded semicircular-arched doorway. Keys to ground-floor
windows, plain above, to 6/6-pane sashes, and dormers. Nos 3-5
have early C19 cast-iron balconies with bowed railings,
wrought-iron spandrels and tented roof, similar to No.17, and
more elaborate with flat railings to No.9.
INTERIOR: details include elliptical hall arches with moulded
archivolts, a dogleg stair with stick balusters, column newels
and ramped rails; frieze and cornice, panelled doors and
shutters.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front basement area railings and
gates, and railings with lamps (these renewed in late C20) to
raised pavement and steps extending approx 130m in front. A
standard Paty design as used on Berkeley Square and elsewhere.
