SAFFRON WALDEN

TL5338 BRIDGE END GARDENS
669-1/1/359 Wall running NE from the centre of
01/11/72 the SW side of the gardens

GV II

Wall. Built 1797 and rebuilt in 1839 and 1840. Red brick.
Approx 3m high and 45m long with piers and buttresses. Flemish
bond merging with header bond in the upper courses. Section to
SW considerably rebuilt in plain style and restored including
a round arched opening with panelled jambs. In the centre the
wall sweeps up over a segmental arched opening having a Coade
stone keystone with a moulded female head inscribed on the
soffit `Coade, London 1794'. From this arch to the NE the wall
is most complete with roll moulded brick coping and piers with
stone caps, surmounting ball finials still in place each side
of archway.
