2 pairs of almshouses, now private houses, forming 2 sides of
small court. c1880. Red brick, upper part of end wings
rendered and pargetted with applied timber framing. Plain tile
roofs with cresting with scrolled finials, central ridge
stacks with splayed bases and cornices. Each pair of 2 storeys
and 2 bays with recessed, jettied wings projecting at gable
ends with lean-to porches in the angles. Boarded doors under
segmental brick arches. Ground floor has 3-light casements
under segmental arches with canted brick sills, first floor
with 2-light small paned casements under segmental arches with
canted brick sills. Single-light small pane casements to end
wings. (1) and (2) have C20 replacement timber casement
windows, and the crestwork is missing. All were built by the
Saffron Walden Almshouse Trustees who acquired the property in
1879.
