Labelled Museum on OS. Depot officers mess for the Beds, Herts and Essex Regiment. 1878. Yellow brick with rusticated quoins, hipped slate roofs. L-shaped plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. N front elevation, principal 6 bayed range with 2 bayed cross-wing projecting at W end, stacks visible at E end junction with cross-wing and one bay eastwards. Door porch in main range projects adjacent to cross-wing. All windows are set in recessed panels, ground floor round headed with keystones, first floor flat headed with decorative soffit, bricks set diagonally. All sashes with glazing bars, ground floor 3x6 panes and upper radial, first floor 3x4 panes. String course between floors and also linking arch springers of ground floor windows. Porch, semicircular arched doorway, fanlight, soffit with chevron and leaf decoration and key stone, glazing bars, 3 panes, Corinthianesque pilasters, attic stage with guilloche panels under parapet. W elevation similar to N but 2 adjoining blocks. N block continuing system of front elevation, S of lesser height with roof break at junction and stacks at junction and at N and S ends. N block of 4 bays, S of 2 with tall ground floor 5-cant bay window, flat roofed with guilloche panels. Below parapet - windows recessed with glazing bars, 3x6 panes. First-floor windows above bay window 3x2 panes. S block, 4 bays, windows in recessed panels, glazing bars, all 3x4 panes. S elevation irregular, as courtyard in internal angle of L-plan. To W, S end of W block, very wide stack, 2 sash windows with glazing bars, ground floor 2x4 panes, first floor 3x4 panes. To E courtyard enclosing wall, behind, projecting section at back of N range. First floor windows with glazing bars, one 3x4 panes, one 2x4 panes and one 1x4 panes. Door porch to E, similar in style to porch on front elevation, door facing S, round headed, glazed fanlight, radial glazing bars, door with 4 flush panels. Window at rear of N range to courtyard, sash, with glazing bars, 4x4 panes. E end elevation, principal N wing plain door porch to S has round headed sash window with glazing bars, 2x4 panes, rear projection to N wing, first floor window with glazing bars, 1x4 panes. INTERIOR: ground floor has some original heavy framed and panelled doors. Both staircases (leading from the 2 porches) with cast-iron banister rails, cast as pairs linked at the base. Stained glass window on landing of principal staircase from N front.
