Description

SAFFRON WALDEN

TL5338 HIGH STREET
669-1/1/218 (East side)
01/11/72 No.76

GV II

Former house, now offices. Early C19 with earlier origins.
Timber-framed and rendered but with front of red Flemish bond
brickwork. Roof is gabled and of plain tiles with 2 slate
roofed lean-to extensions to rear. 2 storeys with attics and
cellars. Off-centre ridge line stack and dentilled brick
eaves. Front first floor has three 9-paned double-hung sash
windows, slightly recessed with broad frames and rubbed brick
flat arches. Ground floor has 2 similar windows but each with
12 panes, and door with rectangular fanlight and moulded
architrave. Door with 6 raised and fielded panels. 2 cement
steps. Basement light with brick arch and iron grille. Rear
elevation has a 2-storey and a single-storey slate roofed
lean-to extension and a gabled dormer. Windows are C20 but
with one 6-paned old casement in first floor of original rear
wall. INTERIOR much modernised but early C19 fire surround on
first floor, straight door set in curved architrave and some
early C19 panelled doors. Was once interconnected with No.76A
(qv) and some exposed internal timber framing probably belongs
with that structure.
