Head post office. c1925. Brick with ashlar front; roof not
visible. Single side wall ashlar stack. Baroque Revival style.
Plain angle pilasters, moulded main cornice. 3 storeys;
8-window range of metal-framed glazing bar casements arranged
1:5:2. Slightly projecting central block, 5 windows, flanked
by entrance bays.
Main block has the upper floors articulated by giant Ionic
pilasters and flanked by rusticated strips with ornamented
capitals, carried through the cornice to form pedestals. In
each bay, a single casement with double keystone, and above, a
smaller casement with keyblock and ornamented apron.
Rusticated ground floor has moulded cornice and moulded
central doorway with keyblock and cornice. 6-pane double doors
with margin-glazed overlight, flanked by 2 large casements. 3
of these windows have posting boxes and stamp machines below
them.
Double entrance bay, to right, has 2 casements on each floor,
the upper ones smaller, all with double keystones. Below, a
round-arched cart entrance with double keystone and swept-top
wrought-iron gates.
Single entrance bay, to left, has a single casement on each
floor, the upper one smaller, with double keystones. Below, a
plain stone doorcase with keyblock and 6-panel double door.
Above it, a louvred round opening with double keystone.
