04/01/91 New Hall Lane Mill
Cotton spinning mill, now occupied by offices, workshops,
gymnasium. Dated 1856 on rainwater head at west end; altered.
Red brick in English garden wall bond with some sandstone
dressings (roof concealed). Rectangular plan on east-west
axis. Four storeys, a 13-window range with pilastered corners
and 1st bay (which is surmounted by sprinkler turret);
segmental-headed windows with raised sills and altered glazing
(and inserted dooway in 2nd bay). West end wall has
round-headed doorway in right-hand corner, and 2 tall
round-headed blocked openings. INTERIOR: Construction visible
at 2nd floor (gymnasium): 3 rows of simple cast-iron columns
carrying cast-iron beams with brick vaulting; ground floor
altered, 1st floor partitioned as offices and workshops.
History: built for Paul Catterall, and then known as New Hall
