GV II

School. c1860. Probably by C Hansom. Random squared sandstone
rubble with limestone dressings, rear exterior ashlar stack,
and a slate roof with bands of hexagonal slates. Gothic
Revival style. Single-depth plan. 2 storeys; 4-window range. A
regular front divided by buttresses with a plinth, moulded
sill bands, ashlar bands, and a cornice with gargoyles beneath
a crenellated parapet. A shallow left-hand porch has a
4-centre arched doorway with double doors and strap hinges,
carved spandrels, with 3 ogee-headed overlights and a small
side light, and weathered roof. 3-light mullion and transom
windows with ogee heads between the buttresses, with metal
casements and stained glass to upper panels; an entrance
second from left with a doorway as above. Gabled ends, that to
right with steps up to an entrance with 4 overlights and side
windows and a trefoil in the top of the gable; that to left
return has ground- and first-floor windows, blind window with
label mould and containing shield trefoil above to gable,
griffon pinnacle. INTERIOR not inspected. A matching design to
the Chemistry block (qv).
