CREDITON

SS826000 HIGH STREET
672-1/5/88 (North side)
No.81

GV II

House. Probably C18 in origin, with C20 alterations. Roughcast
cob; steeply-pitched roof, slated to the front, corrugated
asbestos to the rear, probably originally thatched; stack with
massive rendered shaft in party wall with No 80 (q.v.).
Plan: Double depth, 2 rooms wide. The ground drops away to the
rear where the house has an extra storey and rear access with
a service yard.
Exterior: On a wedge-shaped site, the right return wall angled
inwards towards the rear. 2 storeys to the front, 3 to the
rear. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a late C20 timber front
door in the centre; 2 first and 2 second floor C20 timber
2-pane sashes. Small single-storey wedge-shaped brick outhouse
at the right end has a rounded corner and one C20 window. The
rear elevation has C20 casements and a rear centre door.
Interior: Not inspected.
Group value with listed buildings on both sides of the High
Street. The tall rear elevation contributes to an attractive
urban group.
