Description

ISLINGTON

TQ3183NE ST PETER'S STREET
635-1/59/823 (North East side)
29/09/72 Nos.7-21 (Odd)
and attached railings

GV II

Terraced houses. 1848. Developed by James and Thomas Ward, and
possibly designed by Samuel Angell, Surveyor to the
Clothworkers' Company. Grey brick set in Flemish bond, stucco,
roofs of Welsh and artificial slate. The houses form a
symmetrical group between Cruden Street and Raleigh Street
with the entrance bays recessed and paired, and the window
bays to the inner houses (nos 9-19) also paired, so that the
group reads as three principal two-bay blocks with single-bay
wings at the ends. Steps up to flat-arched porch with pilaster
jambs carrying entablature; recessed flat-arched entrance with
moulded architrave and studded and panelled doors except to no
9. Window bays flanked by giant pilasters carrying
entablature. All windows flat-arched, those in the window bay
unusually broad with stucco architraves and cornice to ground
floor. Most windows have sashes of unusual pattern with margin
lights. Moulded stucco eaves cornice; dormers in roof.
Antefixae fronting party walls which project above the roof
and carry stacks. Unusually ornate area railings with
castellated standards and palmette finials.
