House, now hotel. c1792, by Samuel Nash for Richard Payne
Knight of Downton Castle. Ashlar; hipped slate roof; brick
stack to rear. 3-storeys and basement; 3-window range: 6/6
sashes under combed lintels; 2-light casements over; moulded
stone eaves. Entrance to left: 6-panel door and fanlight in
moulded round-headed case, under moulded stone flat hood and
pilasters; two 6/6 sashes under combed lintels, to right. Left
returned side has 1 tier of similar fenestration. South front:
central 3-tiered bow window with tripartite 3/6: 3/6: 3/6
sashes and moulded cornice, flanked by tiers of 6/6 sashes,
over basement lights under stone segmental arches. Fronted by
ashlar wall and piers with coping, C20 gates, and plank double
doors.
