SO 51 NE LYDBROOK LOWER LYDBROOK
(corner of Proberts Lane to south)

House. Late C15/early C16, with former barn to north, now
incorporated in house, of C17. Timber framed with close studding
on long side walls, complex slate roofs with central stone stack.
2 storeys, on stone plinth, containing cellar to one side only.
Single range with cross gable and former barn to north. Scattered
fenestration, mainly casements. Road front has 3 windows; other
side includes one 6-light wooden mullion window with 2 king
mullions, currently blocked (June 1984).
Interior: cross gable has cambered tie beams on haunched posts and
is 3 bays long. Owner reports smoke blackened timbers in central
bay. These were not inspected. On both floors some "squared"
Tudor arched doorways. 2 back to back medieval fireplaces with
oak bressumer and stone cheeks. Room on ground floor to south has
beams with wide plain chamfers and steps, and "secret" room
above with some paint traces on timberwork still visible, also
remnants of oak screens partition.
