SS 74 NW
3/32 Nos. 1 & 2 Town Farm Cottages and
- The Annexe
GV II
Farmhouse, now divided. Early to mid-C17, possibly incorporating an earlier core,
with C18 addition and probably mid-C19 remodelling and addition. Rendered coursed
stone rubble, painted rubble where render has been removed. Gable-ended Welsh slate
roof.
Plan and development: probably 3-room and cross passage plan, consisting of hall
with large external lateral stack to front, inner room to right with former end
stack (now ridge) and probably C18 addition (see break forward) beyond to right, and
lower room to left with former end stack and projecting gabled C19 cross wing
beyond. Possibly a remodelling of a medieval open hall but no evidence was noted at
time of survey (July 1987). 2 storeys.
Exterior: asymmetrical front with 6 windows to first floor and 5 to ground floor;
C19 2- and 3-light wooden casements, second ground-floor window from right with
painted segmental brick head. Central rendered large external stack with offsets to
tall circular shaft and pitched-roofed link to attic. Ground-floor lean-to square
bay to right (possibly C17) with 3-light wooden casement. C19 Tudor-arched doorway
to left of stack with 2-leaf boarded door, beaded frame, and C19 lean-to porch with
Tudor-arched opening. C20 half-glazed door to right of bay. C18 addition to right
built into hillside, with boarded loft door. C19 1-light wooden casement in right-
hand gable end. 2-storey C19 wing to left with 2-light segmental headed wooden
casement to each floor. Rear: almost continuous outshut with rendered external
lateral stack; pair of eaves dormers.
Interior: central former hall has open stone fireplace with bread oven and deep-
chamfered wooden lintel with run-out stops. Mainly cased beams. Left-hand cottage
and roof space not inspected (July 1987). Some old purlins are visible.
