BANDLEYSIDE,
GREAT ORMSIDE,
Bromleygreen, farmhouse & adjoining barns

II

Farmhouse, lengthened in 1687 with later additions and alterations. Coursed,
squared rubble with quoins on plinth; lime-washed. Graduated slate roof with
corniced stone end chimneys to house. Straight joints to either end of 2-storey,
5-bay house shows adjacent buildings were added and height raised.
Central plank door with fanlight has inserted sash to either side; small
original fire window to left and blocked 2-light mullioned window to right.
Continuous hoodmould with labels above ground-floor openings, rising to clear
door. Sills of original 2-light mullioned windows are visible below the 2
inserted 1st floor sashes; the height of the original window which survives
intact (blocked, above door) indicates level of earlier eaves. All sashes with
glazing bars, all original window surrounds chamfered. Later outshut and gabled
extensions to rear. Cross-passage entrance incorporated in byre-barn to left
has initialled and dated lintel ("C. & E.T." 1687"); wagon door is up ramp at
rear. C18 extension to south has stone coping with kneeler to rear of roof;
segmental-headed wagon door. Further C18/late C19 byre extensions with loft
above at right-angles.
