Mainly late C18 or early C19 but 2 bays remain from an early Cl7 red brick house on
the site. The Cl7 part is tiled and of 2 storeys, refronted in gault brick in
c 1830. Two storey splayed bay and 2 windows with drip moulds. Late C18 addition
to south. Local red brick with early C19 stucco facade. Steeply pitched, slate
roof with end stacks. Two storeys and attics. Band between floors. Range of
4 recessed hung sashes with glazing bars. Ground floor with later gabled porch and
canted bay. Early C19 addition to west. Low pitched, hipped, slate roof. Two ground
floor recessed hung sashes with shaped pelmets. Interior. Two inglenook fireplaces
in C17 part of house. Floor framing visible in one ground floor room. C19 addition
has top lit hall with cantilevered staircase. C19 back staircase inserted into late
C18 range. Early C19 fireplaces and panelled shutters. John Dunton (1659-1733)
author, publisher and bookseller was born here.
